Book Review: Matsya by Sundari Venkatraman

After I read Matsya myself, I read it out to the kids in my Creative Writing class. They were as fascinated as I was. They knew about Narasimha, Ram and Krishna but not much about the other avatars of Vishnu.

Matsya gave them not only a new story but also led to a discussion on evolution and how all religions have similarities. The Noah of Christianity, Judaism and Islam had his counterpart in Manu; both being entrusted with the same job of saving all living species from the flood that destroyed mankind.

The story is short and well written; using language that today’s kids are familiar with. A must read for parents and children.

I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series with my students.

Lord Brahma is highly disturbed when the four vedas are stolen from him the moment he goes to sleep at the end of the kalpa. It’s Asura Hayagriva who’s gotten away with the sacred scriptures.
Lord Vishnu offers to go to the creator’s rescue and takes the guise of Matsya, the fish.
King Satyavrath lands up with a tiny gold fish when he’s offering prayers to the Sun God one morning. Is the fish all that it appears to be?
How can Satyavrath help the fish?
Read more to find out the reason for Lord Vishnu taking the avatar on earth as Matsya.
*This is a straightforward story of the first avatar of Mahavishnu, retold in simple English just the way it’s written over the ages. The target audience is the youngsters, children, who don’t know all that much about Indian mythology. It’s also for those parents who are keen to read aloud stories to their children and are looking for suitable books on mythology.

About the author
Sundari Venkatraman is an indie author who has 16 titles to her name, all Top 100 Bestsellers on Amazon India, Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada and Amazon Australia in both romance as well as Asian Drama categories. Her latest hot romances have all been on #1Bestseller slot in Amazon India for over a month.
Even as a kid, Sundari absolutely loved the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome as she grew up reading all the fairy tales she could lay her hands on, Phantom comics, Mandrake comics and the like. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end.
Soon, into her teens, Sundari switched her attention from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to a local hero and heroine. Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years.
Then came the writing – a true bolt out of the blue! And Sundari Venkatraman has never looked back.

Book Review: His Drunken Wife by Sundari Venkatraman

drunken-wifeA bride who drinks herself into a stupor at her wedding reception when the bridegroom is everything she has wanted in a husband, rich, rich and rich. It makes for an interesting story. As the Maggi ketchup ad says, “It’s different!”

‘His Drunken Wife’ is the second novella in the ‘Marriages Made in India’ series by Sundari Venkatraman. Now, the reasons I wanted to read it in the first place were:

  1. It was part of the “Marriages made in India” series.
  2. I love the way Sundari writes the love scenes.
  3. Her characters come alive.

Both Shikha and Abhimanyu are very strong characters, more complex than any of the characters I’ve encountered in any of Sundari’s previous books. They have layers which are revealed as the story unfolds. This is something pretty difficult to do in a novella, given its length, but Sundari has managed to do it.

A heroine who loves her drinks and is unabashedly sexual, Shikha lives life on her own terms, refusing to let society dictate how she should behave.

A hero who feeds you! My kind of hero! Abhimanu loves Shikha for who she is yet doesn’t allow his personal space to be trampled upon. Like when he tells her that she can have her smoke just not in his house because his mother had died of cancer as a result of passive smoking.  So often we give in to the people we love just because we don’t want to hurt them or because we are afraid that they will withhold their affection from us.

Even when Shikha is mad enough to keep him at length, he continues loving her with a love that shows no signs of martyrdom. That was what made the story really refreshing.

The trip to Bangkok was an added treat. It brought the place vividly alive. Sundari has a knack for description without it getting too boring. I was transported to my Mills & Boons reading days when I learnt all about Greece and Rome from the holidays the heroines took there.

All in all a quick, enjoyable read!

The badass Shikha is startled when the nerdy Abhimanyu proposes marriage. She loves… herself, and Abhimanyu doesn’t figure on her list anywhere. For Abhimanyu, however, it was love at first sight when Shikha walked into RS Software, where the two of them work.

When Abhimanyu shows her that he just might be rich enough for her, a pleasantly surprised Shikha accepts his marriage proposal and moves into his swanky apartment.

But it looks like the love is all from only Abhi’s side as Shikha continues to drink herself crazy. Yeah, even at their wedding party.

And then Abhi sets out on a honeymoon to Thailand with His Drunken Wife…

*MARRIAGES MADE IN INDIA is a five-novella series that revolves around the characters you have met in The Runaway Bridegroom.

It was at least another half an hour before Shikha returned to the party. She directly walked up to her husband and kissed him on his masculine lips. “Forgive me?”

Abhi pulled her close, kissing her deeply. “Always.”

“Did I tell you that you’re the best thing that’s happened to me?” she whispered in his ear, nipping at his earlobe.

“Shikha,” growled Abhi, “Are you even aware of what you’re doing to me? Position yourself in front of me till I gain control or I won’t be responsible for the consequences.”

Shikha gave a tinkling laugh, her hand on his fly, tracing his shape delightedly. “How did I ever imagine you were a staid guy?”

Abhi groaned. “Take your hand off, woman. Please!”

Shikha laughed again, kissing him. “How I love to hear you beg.” She winked at him.

She turned right around and got a waiter to get her another drink, much to Abhi’s chagrin. “Will you lay off the drink, Shikha?” he frowned.

“Why? You can’t afford it or what?” she challenged him, a shapely eyebrow up in query, sherry brown eyes dancing.

“You’ve already had four large pegs.”

“You’ve been counting.” The smile left her face.

“Do you plan to get drunk?”

“Arre yaar, Abhi! It’s our wedding, a once-in-a-lifetime event. I’m only celebrating. Give me a break,” she protested.

“The way you’ve been knocking down the drinks, anyone would think that you’re in pain rather than celebrating.”
